1550

Overview

The Himalayas of Nepal are viewed all over the world as the epitome of majestic beauty and grandeur, gifting the country with a number of natural resources as well as a unique identity as the home of Mt. Everest. However, the mountaineers all over the world also know the Himalayas as the perfect adventure trekking destination. The Everest Base camp Cho la Pass Trekking is one of the most popular treks in the region with hundreds of tourists flocking towards the area every year.

The major highlights of the trek are the Base camp (the starting point of the Everest expedition) and the Gokyo valley (a beautiful site in the region) that allows a close-up encounter of the Himalayan range. With a strong determination and zeal for adventure, you can reach the two vantage points Kalapathar (5550 m) and Gokyo RI (5357 m), from where you can enjoy the remarkable views of Mount Everest. With superb mountain viewpoints and a thrilling mountain pass to conquer, Nepal Eco Adventure welcomes you to experience a thrilling holiday in the Nepalese Himalayas.

Along with Mount Everest, 4 other highest peaks are located in the Khumbu region and the Everest Base Camp Cho-La pass trek allows you to enjoy all these snow capped mountains right in front of your eyes. Mount Everest (8848m), Mt Lhotse (8516m), Mt Makalu (8485m). Cho-Oyu (8201 m), Nuptse, Amadablam, Thamserku, Pumori and Khumbutse are the highlighting peaks of the Himalayas   that surround the valleys and glaciers of the area providing a scenic trip through the Khumbu region. As a tourist, apart from the valleys, lakes, glaciers, rivers, terraced cliffs and forests, one can also indulge in the culture, customs, religious ceremonies and lifestyles of the Sherpa people and get a better understanding of the people through the numerous historical monuments.

While Sagarmatha( Nepali name of Mount Everest) attracts a number of local and foreign tourists throughout the year, Sagarmatha National Park is contributing towards the conservation of the various exotic flora and fauna in the area that are very important for the environmental balance. The national park has been a popular tourist attraction while being Eco friendly and controlling illegal human activities. The variation in vegetation ranges from barren lands to very high alpine bushes. Animals like Yaks, Jokyos, mules and horses are domesticated especially for transportation purposes whereas endangered animals like Musk Deer, Himalayan black Bear, Wild mountain Goat, Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Rhesus Monkey, common Langoor, Mountain Hawk, Pheasant, Lophophorus and others are protected in the area which provide a diverse and rich natural experience to the visitors.

Itinerary

Day 1
Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Phakding.

We board a flight to Lukla early in the morning. It takes 30 minutes to arrive at Lukla airport. There we will be introduced to our porter. Then, we will stop for breakfast after which we will begin our first day’s walk to Phakding, a fairly easy 3 hours walk through the Dudhkosi valley. We will head north from the airstrip to Chheplung (2700m). Here we will cross the Thado Koshi River on a local-style suspension bridge. Just past the bridge, we can see the peak Kusum and Kanggru (6367m), which are the most difficult trekking peaks to climb. Beyond the ThadoKoshi, the trail climbs a bit towards Ghat (2590m), then we will cross a ridge marked with painted Mani stones and climb to Phakding where we will stay overnight.

Day 2
Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m)

We start our second day of trek through the Valley of Dudhkosi River. We cross the Dudhkosi River five times on the exciting suspension bridges laden with prayer flags on the way to Namche. After we cross the last bridge, there is a steep climb up to Namche where the trail gradually leads up to Jorsale. It is a 2 and a half hour climb up to Namche with two view points on the way. We can have a mesmerizing view of Mt Everest on a clear day. At Jorsale, we enter the Sagarmatha National park where we will need to verify our permits. After 5 or 6 hours of hard walking, we reach the main trading centre, Namche bazaar.

Day 3
Acclimatization day at Namche.

Acclimatization is very important before proceeding higher to avoid altitude sickness. We will be taken for a day’s hike through the villages of Khunde and Khumjung and come back to Namche through the Everest view hotel Khumjung. We can see the head of a Yeti in the monastery of the area. We can also visit the bakery at world’s highest altitude. We get to enjoy the panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and many other mountains on a fair day. Even the view from Everest View hotel is very impressive. We start with a steep one-hour climb to the Syangboche airstrip (3790m), from where we will slowly ascend towards Khunde passing numerous chorten (stone Buddhist monuments). From Khunde, we follow the trail eastwards to Khumjung, the largest village in Khumbu, at the foot of the sacred peak Khumbila. After enjoying lunch at Khumjung, we follow a gradual climb to Everest View Hotel where we will enjoy the splendid mountain views. Then we descend towards Namche (3540m).

Day 4
Trek to Tengboche (3790m).

Our route for today to Tengboche weaves in and out of side valleys, making small ups and downs, to the teashops of Kenjoma, and joins the trail from Khumjung just before a collection of Mani stones. The views of Everest and Ama Dablam are excellent from this part of the trek. We pass the small settlement of Sanasa from where the trail drops towards Phunkithanga (3250m). From here the trail climbs steeply through pine forests and around Mani stones as it follows the side of a hill to the saddle on which the monastery of Tengboche sits at 3870m. The view from here is rightly deemed to be one of the world’s most magnificent sceneries. Kwangde (6187m), Tawachee (6542m), Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse (8501m), Amadablam, Kantega and Thamserku provide an inspiring panorama as the Himalayan giants. We will spend the night in Tengboche village (5 hrs).

Day 5
Trek to Dingboche (4350m).

We descend through a beautiful forest then cross the Imja Khola and trek through the village of Pangboche. The route continues through summer pastures to Dingboche. We will spend the night at Dingboche. It is a very relaxing village with lots of mountain views. This is very easy walk and takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Day 6
Day trip to Chhukung valley and back to Dingboche.

We will start around 8:30 after breakfast. The trek up to Chhukung is quite nice and easy. We get a really nice view of most of the mountains specially Ama Dablam. The view from Chhukung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island Peak is tremendous. To the south-west, the eastern face of Amadablam provides an unusual view of this picturesque peak. This short trek is one of the highlights of the trek. It is a fast trip back down the valley to Dingboche for the night. While going back to Dingboche we might encounter strong winds.

Day 7
Trek to Lobuche (4950m).

We start with a climb to the chorten trail that is a gentle climb for about 1 and half hours. Then we get to Thugla at 4600m with a tea house where we will have lunch before climbing the steep part of the day’s trek for about one and a half hours. We start to get close to high mountains like Mt. Pumori and Mt. Nuptse after a while as we proceed towards Lobuche where only basic accommodation and food is provided. Then we trek along a broad valley floor to Thugla, leaving behind the Trekkers Aid Post at Pheriche at 4240 m. A western volunteer doctor, supported by The Himalayan Rescue Association is stationed here and offers treatment and consultation to trekkers as we continue up the valley gaining altitude. When we come out of the valley, we descend to the yak pastures at Lobuche. Overnight at Lodge. The day’s trip takes about 5 and a half hour’s walk.

Day 8
Trek to Everest Base camp (5360m.), back to Gorakshep.

This morning, we will take a 2 hour’s hike up to Gorakshep. First part is nice and easy but one hour later the trail starts to get harder which is compensated by the really nice view of big walls formed by Everest, Nuptse and many other mountains. Once we climb about 150m then trail gets better again. Short after we will get to the moraine. Finally we get to 5160m, the world’s highest settlement at Gorakshep. Once we have lunch, we begin our walk to Everest base camp. We will be walking on side ridge of the Khumbu glacier. After walking on the ridge for about one and half hours, we cross the Glacier and into the Everest base camp area. Today we reach Everest base camp at an altitude of 5360m. We will be able to meet and talk to other mountain climbers at the base camp. We can get a good view of Khumbu glacier and Khumbu Ice fall. From there we can also see the big crevasses in the climbing way. After appreciating our own efforts and photographing the achievements, we start our way back to Gorakshep. (6-7 hour)

Day 9
Early morning to Kalapather then trek to Dzonglha(4830m).

We will start the 1.5 hour’s hike to Kalapathar early in the morning to get sunrise over the Everest and other mountain. We spend some time enjoying the sunrise on the splendid Himalayan ranges, relishing in a unique view and experience and head back to Gorekshep breakfast then continue to Dzolgla. From Gorekshep -Lobuche takes about 2 hours and another 2 hours hike will take us to Dzongla from Lobuche. Total today hiking will be around 7 hours. Dzongla is the only place where we can spend the night before the Chola pass.

Day 10
Cross the Chola pass (5420m) then trek down to Tagnag(4695m).

Early morning after breakfast, we start our walk from Dzongla to the Cho-la pass. The walk over the glacier is an enjoyable experience if we can make the trip during the best season otherwise excess snow makes it impossible to cross the pass. As the darkness returns we trek down to Tagnag to spend the night there.

Day 11
Trek to Gokyo (4800m) then visit fifth lake back to Gokyo.

It is a short day trek as we reach Gokyo in about 2-3 hours just in time to have lunch. Then we spend the rest of the day exploring the Gokyo valley. We can also visit the glaciers and turquoise lakes of the Gokyo valley while witnessing the spellbinding views of the Himalayan giants like Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse Makalu and others. We spend the night in Gokyo.

Day 12
Early morning climb up Gokyo Ri then trek down to Dole(4200m)

The upwards trek is quite a feat to Gokyo RI. Every step of the steep climb is worth it once we reach the pass and see the astonishing views of the Gokyo valley, the Ngozumpa glacier and a panoramic scene of the Khumbu Himalayan giants. After spending some time there, we make our way down to Dole where we spend the night.

Day 13
Trek to Namche bazaar.

The trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar takes about six hours. During the course of the day, we cross the Khumjung village while walking on the base of Mount Amadablam. Once we reach Namche Bazaar, we rest and spend the night there.

Day 14
Trek down to Lukla.

From Namche, first we make our way towards Phakding which takes about 5-6 hours, and then a leisurely walk takes us to Lukla by evening where we spend the night in a hotel or a Sherpa village. 1. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
It was a adventure! And in the beginning I didn’t know what I have to expect or what will expect me. Chatraum, the most helpful General Manager answered all of my (silly) questions and the day we met it was like meeting a friend. After having a 6hr sightseeing tour in Kathmandu with a fabulous guide (sorry, I missed to write down the correct name spelling), Chhatra explained everything about the trek and advised us to our guides Arun and Bijay. The 10-man group didn’t know each other but became suddenly very close...adventurous flight to Lukla and then the trek starts. Arun and Bijay led the group perfect, mixed with fun and knowledge about nature and culture. The stays were perfectly chosen and even they introduced us to Sherpa food. The days went easily by. Unfortunately I got healthy problems after day 2 but Doctor Bijay had the right stuff to cure... Reaching EBC was hilarious, once in a lifetime moment I could share with my new family! Wonderful days, perfect organized trek, great guides and porters...thanks to all Nepal Eco Adventure team members! Finally we were stucked in Lukla but Bijay found a way out of this situation so that I could manage to reach my international flight...that’s what I really appreciated I came as a foreigner but Chhatra, Arun, Bijay and all the guys made me feel like a friend...and we stay like that. To everyone: I can really recommend Nepal Eco Adventure! Hiking tours on highest level!
  2. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
I booked the Base Camp/Chola Pass/Gokyo trek. I couldn’t have been happier with the trip. The Owner, Chattra, was extremely helpful in assisting me prepare for the trek. He was informative and timely in answering my questions. In addition, once in Kathmandu Chattra provided our group with some last minute recommendations to make sure that we were ready for the trek. While out in the mountains, our guide, Keshab, along with the assistant guide and porters were all fantastic. They catered to everyone’s needs and were always looking out for our safety. By booking the tour and having a guide it really helped alleviate much of the stress one would incur if they attempted to trek in the Himalayas guideless. Everything from our passes/permits, accommodation and food was taken care of. All we had to follow our guide and walk (which at times can be a litter harder than it sounds). Also, as a solo traveler I found it enjoyable to trek with a group. I was fortunate to meet some great people from all over the world. Oh, and of course the trek itself was amazing. The mountains were absolutely gorgeous. Clearly, I’d highly recommended booking a trip with Nepal Eco Adventure. They’ll provide you with a professional and care-free Himalayan trekking experience.
  3. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
I joined the EBC, Cho-la Pass and Gokyo trek leaving in mid-March. I was introduced to the group in Kathmandu before we flew to Lukla. The trek was incredible, exceeding expectations with nearly perfect weather, stunning views and great people. Keshab, our lead guide was excellent. Clearly explaining our plans, making sure we were in good condition (food, medical checkups including blood oxygen tests etc.) and always giving us honest advice. He really went above and beyond, tweaking our itinerary as we went to make sure we saw the sights in the best conditions (lighting, weather, avoiding other groups etc.) while at the same time taking into account everyone's speed, making sure to push us just the right amount to get the best experience. When one of our group members started suffering from altitude sickness, our guides were prompt and professional, explaining the situation, the options and always putting safety first. Having heard stories of some guides being over-eager to fly in rescue helicopters, it was great to see the professionalism on display here (everything worked out fine in the end). Chhatra was always quick and clear when responding to email (seemingly regardless of timezone!) and when we saw him in Kathmandu. I looked into lots of options when planning a trip to EBC, including other tour operators, independent guides and going solo, but after my experience with Nepal Eco Adventure, I'm already thinking about returning to Nepal and will undoubtably be organising things through Nepal Eco Adventure in the future!
  4. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
My brother in law Marc and I booked a group trip not knowing who were in our team. We were so fortunate to spend 2 weeks with 4 wonderful other trekkers, Steve, Seth, Claire and Jon and with the nicest team led by Keshab. With his experience leading a group up the mountain, he showed us the most amazing scenery, told us stories about the people and made our trip so much fun. I can really recommend this organisation and Chattra who runs it from Khatmandu goes to the extreme to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
  5. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
I was going to Nepal solo and booked the EBC/Cho-la/Gokyo trek. From beginning to end, everything was perfect. Chhatra, the owner, was really responsive and could answer all questions quick and thouroughly, so the booking amd preparation was easy. On arrival everything went very smooth, the pick-up, the hotel and all the rest. For the trek we were only two people along with our guide and porter. This was really nice and worked out perfectly. Accomodation is often rather basic, but Nepal Eco Adventures made sure we were staying at the best places in the villages we went through. Our guide Bashu took care of everything, from the morning we left Kathmandu up to our return. He was very knowledgable, spoke great English and took great care of our every need. He always walked at the perfect pace for us (i am sure he could have gone a lot faster) and helped us out whereever he could. As he said "You come as a customer and leave as a friend", and that's exactly how it went. Thanks Bashu! I can wholeheartedly recommend Nepal Eco Adventure and will surely go with them again on my next Nepal trip. If you book your trip, make sure to ask for Bashu for the best service, fun and experience!
  6. Everest Base Camp – Cho-La Pass – Gokyo Trek
I had a great experience with Nepal Eco Adventures, trekking to Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes (with two additional days sightseeing in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur), and enjoying a wildlife safari in the Chitwan National Park. With so many other tour agencies in Kathmandu, it is difficult to choose who to go with, but I highly recommend Nepal Eco Adventures. Chhatra is extremely welcoming, trustworthy, and well-organised. He was very attentive and always full of good humour. From his introductory email to my last few hours in Kathmandu, Chhatra answered every question promptly and in good detail, going out of his way to provide the smoothest experience possible. Chhatra provides a personalised and friendly service that's excellent value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to use his company again or recommend it to others. Truly, the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes trek was one of the best experiences of my life. Our guide was Ram who was brilliant throughout; easy-going, very friendly, always ready to joke and laugh, but professional, very hardworking, reassuring and encouraging too. He answered our every question about the trek, about life in the mountains and Nepali culture, and was always at hand with facts about the Himalayas and its many mountains. Having never been on a trek before, I was glad we had Ram to guide us. We had no worries, just time to enjoy the beautiful views. Having spent hours researching this trek online, I am surprised that so many other groups trek to Gokyo first, before crossing the Cho La Pass to base camp. I'm glad Eco Adventures took the eastern route first. Not only is the route a safer choice for altitude acclimatisation, the scenery ascending to base camp via Tengboche and Dingboche is far more spectacular. It also makes crossing the challenging Cho La Pass more manageable, going down the steep western side rather than struggling up it. The scenery going down from Gokyo was beautiful too, but less dramatic, and the journey down takes less time than going up. I was glad to spend more time dwarfed by the snow-capped mountains. I'm a person of average fitness, but believe most people would enjoy this trek. There is no pressure to go beyond your ability, just take your time and enjoy. Do it and you will not regret it!
