Ama Yangri, situated in the Sindhupalchowk district of the Helambu region of Nepal, is a beautiful viewpoint. It has gradually become a favorite destination among trekking enthusiasts. The trek can be completed within 3 days. So, this trek is ideal for adventurers traveling on a limited schedule.
The trek offers spectacular views of the Helambu valley and snowy mountains like Gaurishankar, Jugal, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal and many others. The trek’s maximum altitude is 3,771 m. The highest elevation is moderate. So, the trek is manageable for most explorers.
Located within Langtang National Park, Ama Yangri is believed to be the protector of the Helambu residents. This charming hill also provides a glimpse into the spiritual essence of the Helambu region.

Ama Yangri Trek: Short & Scenic Journey in the Helambu Region
The Ama Yangri trek is a short and stunning journey in the Helambu region. Many high-altitude adventures in Nepal take longer to complete. However, this trek offers an exhilarating exploration experience in a short span of time. The entire trek takes only three days to complete.
The trail of this trek passes through dense rhododendron forests, traditional villages, terraced farmlands, and monasteries. This Himalayan journey provides breathtaking views of the Langtang Himal, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal, and many other Himalayan peaks.

Ama Yangri’s Morning Magic: The Sunrise Experience
Most of the trekkers hike to Ama Yangri early for the sunrise views. They begin their journey before dawn using a headlamp to reach the peak before the sun rises. For watching an incredible sunrise, you can start your hike at dawn.
The trail feels calm and quiet, captivating you with the gentle sounds of nature. Though there are some steep sections, the hike is worth it for the incredible views. As the sun rises, the mountains glow softly. It looks almost surreal.
At this point, you can see hikers, take photographs, and stand in silence to watch the sunrise. Likewise, you will be treated to some of the most spectacular views of Nepal’s snowy mountains. Dorje Lakpa, Gangchempo, Jugal Himal, Gaurishankar and many other mountains look majestic under clear skies.
When the sun rises, the sky gradually changes colors ranging from a deep blue in the early hours of dawn to shades of pink, orange and gold. The snow capped mountains look surreal because of the warm golden light. Witnessing this moment is one of the notable highlights of this trek.
Ama Yangri Trek Route
The Ama Yangri trek is a 3 day journey in Helambu region. The adventure begins with a thrilling drive from Kathmandu to Tarke Ghyang. There are different routes to reach Tarke Ghyang.
Starting in Kathmandu, the route takes you through the Sankhu Melamchi road. Then, the journey continues through Melamchi before ascending to the beautiful Timbu and Tarkeyghyang. The glimpses of rural life and terraced farms can be seen along the way. This makes the drive truly captivating.
Alternatively, you can also drive from Banepa and continue towards Melamchi, Sermathang, and to reach Tarkeyghyang. Another way is through Nagarkot. The journey begins in Nagarkot and then reconnects with the Melamchi route, leading you toward the Ama Yangri area and Sermathang, before you reach Tarkeyghyang.
Each route is scenic and will take you to the Helambu region, combining mountain landscapes and rewarding you with exciting experiences. Tarke Ghyang (2,600 m) is one of the largest and culturally significant villages in the area. Here, you can visit ancient monasteries. In addition, you can also see traditional houses and experience local hospitality.
You can reach Ama Yangri Peak (3,771 m) after 3–4 hours of trekking from Tarke Ghyang, ascending over forests and steep paths. Then, the trail descends back to Tarke Ghyang for an overnight stay. The next day a 5 hour drive along the Melamchi road takes you back to Kathmandu marking the end of this scenic Himalayan adventure.
Ama Yangri Trek Difficulty
The Ama Yangri trek is an easy-to-moderate trek in the Helambu region. Its maximum elevation is 3,771 m. The trek takes approximately three days and requires you to traverse through both well-marked and rocky paths.
Though the trek is considered ideal for newcomers, having a good fitness level is essential. For hiking to Ama Yangri peak, you have to walk for five to six hours on steep paths. Though technical skills are not needed, you must be physically fit to handle continuous uphill walking.
The Ama Yangri trek has some notable challenges. However, its difficulty is manageable. In fact, it is considered an excellent alternative to other long high-altitude treks in the Himalayas.
The trek does not feature extremely challenging locations. Its peak elevation is also moderate. So, almost anyone who is physically fit, hydrated and well prepared can successfully conclude this trek.

Permits Required for the Ama Yangri Trek
You will need a Langtang National Park Entry Permit for the Ama Yangri trek. The trek passes through the Lantang National Park. So, having this permit is essential.
The funds collected through the permit fees are used for environmental conservation and trail maintenance. In addition, the permit system helps authorities keep records of trekkers so that they can locate them in emergencies and manage rescue when needed.
